Laser Treatment for Fungal Nail
The laser procedure requires a small number of safe, quick treatments with little or no discomfort and is performed as an outpatient service with no anesthesia. The laser light beam has no effect on healthy tissue and treats only the infected area of the nail.
How does the laser work?
The Laser beam is designed to shine through your nail and destroy the specific pathogens embedded in and under your nail that cause the infection. The nail will not become instantly clear- it takes time to grow out. This is a better result than antifungal medicine, which you take for three months with some risk of side effects to the liver or kidneys.
How soon will I see improvement?
If the nail bed is healthy the nail plate should grow out in 6-12 months, with healthy new growth visible within the first 3 months.
Results
Failure to respond to standard therapy for onychomycosis could be related to the presence of dormant chlamydospores and arthroconidia within the diseased nail plate which are not resistant to laser irradiation. After series of treatments healthy nail push diseased portion of nail out where it can be cut or scraped as the nail grows out. The laser light works through the nail selectively photo-inactivate fungal pathogens to a depth below the nail tissue surface leaving the surrounding tissue intact.
